Alliance Française du Bengale is a non-profit educational and cultural institution dedicated to promoting the French language, intercultural dialogue, and artistic exchange. Established in Kolkata in 1940, it is India’s second-oldest Alliance Française center.
As part of an international network, the institution contributes to cultural cooperation, language education, and meaningful exchanges between France, India, and the wider Francophone world.
For more than eight decades, Alliance Française du Bengale has played an active role in strengthening cultural ties through language learning, artistic programming, and inclusive cultural initiatives.

Our History: From 1940 to Today
Over Eight Decades of French Language and Cultural Exchange
Founded in Kolkata in 1940, Alliance Française du Bengale has evolved alongside the city’s educational and cultural landscape while remaining committed to language learning, artistic exchange, and intercultural dialogue.
Over the decades, the institution has continuously adapted to new spaces, new audiences, and new generations of learners, while preserving its role as a bridge between France, India, and the wider Francophone world.
Today, it remains a vibrant center for education, creativity, and cultural engagement.
Key Milestones
1940 – Foundation of Alliance Française in Calcutta (now Kolkata).
1999 – Temporary relocation following a major fire affecting the historic premises.
2005 – Creation of The French Association, marking an important structural transition.
2007 – Official renaming to Alliance Française du Bengale.
2014 – Return to Park Street, reconnecting with a historic institutional location.
2020 – Opening of a new cultural space and the Jit Paul Auditorium.
