René Lacaille met Debashish and Subashish Bhattacharya during a Summer Festival in Quebec where the former had been invited with his children Marco and Oriane at the initiative of Jean Beauchesne, who had already introduced him to Bob Brozman. The meeting dates back to late 90s.
Consequently, they met one another several times, particularly on the Reunion island to play at the Teat de St Gilles, atfestival des Escales of St Nazaire in Grenoble (MC2).
Each encounter between the great maestros of Indian slide guitar and tabla, and their counterparts in Réunion was an amazing moment, Bengalis and Creoles understanding one another so well toward weaving a wonderfully joyous, classical music, each listening respectfully to music and tradition of others, the artists of Réunion amazed by the mastery and technique of ragas and Hindusthani songs rendered by the Bhattacharya and the Bengali maestros surprised by the inventiveness and wealth of their counterparts in Réunion.
Debashish Bhattacharya wanted, for a long time, to invite René Lacaille to play in India, in a festival that the former would orgasnise. The terrible consequences of the tsunami (2004) prevented this project to be realized. But the event is included in the agenda for the 2nd International Guitar Festival (IIGF) to be held in Kolkata in January 2016.
