About SERGE BETSEN- “The Legendary Rugby Player”
Serge Betsen (born 25 March 1974 in Kumba, Cameroon) is a former French international rugby union flanker, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation. After moving to France at the age of nine, he began his rugby journey in Clichy before joining Biarritz Olympique, where he played for over a decade and won multiple French Championship titles. Between 1997 and 2007, he earned 63 caps for the French national team, contributing to their Grand Slam victories in the 2002 and 2004 Six Nations Championships.
Renowned for his uncompromising defence and relentless spirit, Betsen was nicknamed “La Faucheuse” (“The Grim Reaper”) for his ability to disrupt opposing attacks. Following his playing career — which concluded with London Wasps in 2012 — he dedicated himself to social development and leadership initiatives. In 2004, he founded the Serge Betsen Academy, a non-profit organisation empowering children in Cameroon and Mali through education, healthcare, and rugby. Today, he continues to inspire as a consultant, motivational speaker, and advocate for using sport as a force for positive change.
