The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF), designed by  France Education International (FEI) and accredited by the French Ministry of Education, is a French language proficiency test for non-native speakers of French who wish to evaluate and have their level of proficiency certified for professional, academic or personal reasons. It is also used by Canada or Québec for immigration procedures.

In general, the TCF grades and ranks candidates at one of the six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2) on a scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). TCF grade results are reliable measurements for determining proficiency. Each candidate is awarded a certificate which is valid for two years.

Since April 2019, Alliance française du Bengale is an accredited centre authorised to hold sessions. We offer:

  • TCF TP (tout public)
  • TCF Canada
  • TCF Québec

Kindly note that:

  • All tests are taken on a computer.
  • Candidates must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Candidates may take the test several times, allowing a minimum of 30 days between two exam sessions.
  • Candidates must register at least 15 days prior to the preferred day for the examination.

How do I type in French?

During the exam, you will have to write a text in French on a desktop. To do so, you have several options. You can use the virtual keyboard shown on screen during the examination, use ALT codes (as presented here: https://www.alt-codes.net/french_alt_codes/), or use the US International keyboard and its set of dead keys to type the French special characters.

French special characters with a US International keyboard:

  • To type accent grave (à, è, etc), type ` (to the left of 1) then the vowel.
  • Accent aigu (é), type ‘ (single quote) then e.
  • Accent grave (ù), type ` (accent, left of the 1-key) then u.
  • Cédille (ç), type ‘ then c.
  • Circonflexe (ê), type ^ (shift + 6) then e.
  • Tréma (ö), type ” (shift + ‘) then o.
  • To type French quotation marks « » use ctrl + alt + [ and ], respectively.
  • This works as well with capital letters. For example: for Ç, type the apostrophe  ‘ then  C.
