Known as “the painter of black and light,” Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) forged a career remarkable not only for its rigorous invention, but for its longevity. He is mostly known for turning black into a luminous colour and as he powerfully evoked the genesis of the world, which came out of darkness. His long journey in visual art practice reflects the mark of our time, our existence.
César Baldaccini (1921 – 1998) is one of the great sculptors of the twentieth century. In his magical hands, he transforms rusty bolts, screws, old car parts, discarded cans and plexiglass have been compacted into delightful works of art that César himself has called “compressions”. Still we are yet to discover the mystery of his great works in our present context.
Subrata Ghosh, a visual artist, pedagogue and author will give a presentation on these two masters at Alliance Francaise du Bengale on 23rd October 2024.
