Synopsis

A stranger comes to order a watch to the watchmaker because time stands still in her life – she leaves Delhi at around 12:30 pm and reaches Kolkata at 12.30 pm itself…

The film ‘Watchmaker’ encapsulates a philosophical debate on the three ideological concepts of time- time that rolls back, time that is fixed, time that doesn’t exist which the three characters epitomize. The fourth character, the commentator is trying to pull in and bridge the missing links.

A watch is a metaphor. Every single body has a different perception about time.

The ‘Watchmaker’ is a character for whom time travels backwards; therefore the hands of the watches he makes moves against time and civilization. The counter philosophy to this civilization is madness. This is a midnight story which has got no apparent connection with science or the concept of time travel.

A word from the Director

Watchmaker is a film that challenges our idea of order, symmetry and spatial logic by the visual metaphor of stairs, which essentially invokes the memory of M.C. Escher’s graphic work ‘Relativity.’

Brute force supersedes intellect and supremacy of a philosophical idea is determined by the gun-toting gamers.

I find a visual pun in the use of guns in this film, as creative people shoot with camera and dehumanized ones shoot with guns. Watchmaker trains our mind to question the architecture of our immediate reality, our understanding of the truth- do we need films in its conventional form, or in the absence of time?
