A screening of documentary Kolkata 2070 presented by the Centre for Contemporary Communication and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kolkata.

The city is sinking. Or so it might in 50 years if action is not taken collectively as well as individually by citizens.

This is the message that comes across in this documentary Kolkata 2070. The issues in the film are threatening and of utmost importance – water, sanitation, solid waste management, air pollution, energy, city’s natural resources, challenges of climate change and environment. The story line and the script of the documentary are based on established scientific evidences and documents like the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Bank’s report on climate change for Calcutta. The choice of 2070 as the year in which the imaginary scene of inundation is shown to take place is based on predictions in these documents. Kolkata 2070 does not mean to be alarmist but wants to alert people by holding up a mirror to the future. Its goal is to establish channels of communication between civil society and politics, addressing issues of sustainable development and transformation towards a low carbon economy.

Earth Day Network India will be present at this screening to share a presentation on their green and pro-environment initiatives such as #EndPlasticPollution and #SaveTheBeach.
