1754 and 1954, two years that are two-hundred years apart; yet both are French departures from India. 1754 is the year that Joseph François Dupleix, the influential Governor General of the French trading posts in India, left the country. 1954 is the year in which sovereignty of the French possessions in India passed to the Union of Indian States de jure.

French Books on India: from Dupleix to Decolonization began as a list of books referring to the two-hundred year period between 1754 and 1954 and published between 1754 and 2010. The list has since been significantly updated. This site offers readers the opportunity to read full text copies of selected titles from 1756 to 1939, and to read in one place critical summaries of the content of the most important books by international scholars in the field.

Our goal is to make our readers our collaborators, and so please get in touch with us if you have suggestions about how we can improve this site’s content, or if you would like to contribute to our efforts.
