ABOUT WHOLE 9 YARDS
Whole 9 Yards is a promising young-theater company, will be staging the musical productions. Whole 9 Yards have produced exciting forms of theatre in Kolkata independently and with reputed consulates and organisations. Last September Whole 9 Yards produced a Jazz Musical for the Russian Centre for Science and Culture to commemorate GerasimLebedev – Pioneer Indologist and Pioneer of Indian Theatre, on his 200th death anniversary. This musical and the latest cafe musical production – Taramandal have been a buzz in media and in the city.
OBJECTIVE OF THE EVENING:
To come together for theatre, an art form that has a glorious history and is also a heritage for countries all around the world. An art form which is slowly losing its charm like other art forms under the tremendous pressure of digitalization. Let us celebrate theatre, share our experiences of theatre, discuss the possibilities and take a pledge to carry the theatre legacy forward. Let us talk theatre and then witness one, over tea and coffee.

SYNOPSIS:
Extending Satyajit Ray’s famous short story ‘PatolBabuFilmstar’, Taramandal weaves a tapestry of endearing stories. Celebrating the humble heroism of those who reach for the stars and often fall flat on their faces. Taramandal, brings forth common everyday characters with touches of humour and a “sadness that has lightness,” as it journeys towards disillusionment. Taramandal shines spotlight on characters from life spurned by the conventional spotlight.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE:
I read Neel Chaudhury’sTaramandal soon after it won ‘The MetroPlus Playwright Award in 2010. The play has extremely engaging structure, both tight and fluent at the same time, within which nestles a riveting directness of emotion. Joy, pain, pathos, longing, the inter-play between the world of performance and the performer – all are deeply moving in the compelling stories of dreams and failure and the resurrection of the spirit that Taramandal holds within itself. But I chose not to produce it on stage but bring it to a real space where theatre is difficult and rare. Intimate theatre excites me more than proscenium. Compels me to discover new forms. And, I deconstructed Neel’s Taramandal into a cafe musical. Characters became a part of the coffee shop chosen as the venue. And the story revolves in and around the coffee shop. This version of Taramandal gives you a fresh experience of seeing theatre.
