Picture 5 (1) Theophilus Benjamin is one of the leading classical guitarists in the country. He got an early start in church music as both his parents served in the church. He has been singing ever since he can remember and was part of the church choirs. Beginning on the acoustic guitar at the age of 13 guitar has been his passion ever since. While pursuing his college studies in Tura, Meghalaya, he started learning the classical guitar. He appeared for the Licentiate diploma from Trinity College London (LTCL) and passed with distinction in 2008. He is currently preparing to be a Fellow of the Trinity College London.

Theophilus is an active performer and was part of the New Delhi Guitar Quartet. He has performed at the University of Peradeniya, Kandy and the Russian Cultural Center, Colombo in Sri Lanka and various parts of India including the Amaltas hall and Stein Auditorium at India Habitat Center,New Delhi, the Instituto Cervantes in New Delhi, the Satyajit Ray auditorium at ICCR Kolkata, Victoria Memorial Kolkata and others. Some of his notable collaborations include interpretation of Bengali River songs with noted folk singer Saurav Moni on the occasion of World Music Day in 2015, and interpretation of Enrique Granados’ Spanish Dance no.5 with noted Mohinyattam danseuse Eugenia Carillo from Spain at the Instituto Cervantes, Delhi in November 2013. In August 2013 he performed with the Mozart of Sweden, Johannes Moller at the renowned Stein Auditorium at India Habitat Center, Lodi Road, New Delhi. He also had the privilege of recording with Johannes Moller for his album in Kolkata. He was also invited to perform with India’s famous fusion band, Advaita at IHC Amphitheatre in 2012.

Theophilus was a part of the guitar faculty at the Performers’ Collective School of Music, Gurgaon and The Delhi School of Music, The Calcutta Center for Communication and Creativity as well as educational outreach programmes of the Calcutta Classical Guitar Society aimed at the children from villages and the underprivileged sections of the society.

Currently he is on a break and will be based in Ooty from July 2016 onwards as Faculty in Music at the Good Shepherd International School

He enjoys singing songs from the 80’s, a bit of country, a bit of pop and loves to play the nylon string guitar all the time.
