Seminar

In 2018, we mark the 33rd anniversary of the European Capitals of Culture , one the best known EU cultural programs. Since 1985, many European cities undertook this initiative, while offering a 6 month to 1 year artistic and cultural activities in various domains – music, theater, dance, heritage promotion, museums, street arts, visual arts. The program experienced various developments since its creation.

From prestigious and high culture presentations, it has progressively moved on to more extended forms of activities, including sports, ecology, participative arts, urbanism, social cohesion and welfare. Today, each year, 2 European cities are nominated  – one in Western Europe, one in Central and Oriental Europe or newly EU state members. In 2018 Leeuwarden-Friesland (The Netherlands) and La Valette (capital city of Malta) are both European Capitals of Culture.

Such an initiative inspired other continents : Latin American European Capitals of Culture, Arabic ones, some Asiatic ones. In a cultural city as Kolkata, this talk by Anne-Marie Autissier aims to present these various proposals.
